hi everyone, first time poster.

I currently have a Masterbuilt gasser cabinet smoker. It's been great but I'm ready to move on to a pellet smoker. Budget is a concern so naturally I was looking at Traegers at Costco (easy return if I don't like it) but recently started looking at GMG.

I was hoping some of you guys could help me with a capacity question. At Thanksgiving I smoke two 10lb - 12lb birds at the same time in the Masterbuilt. I know that a Traeger Texas Elite sized grill is plenty big, but it's out of the budget. Can anyone tell me if a Lil Tex or GMG DB will hold two of these sized birds.

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciate. An odd buying criteria, but it's a wife requirement.

Thanks
Marc!

The GMG DB certainly should handle that or even larger.  You have a little over 13" of headroom above the grates.

I doubt the Lil Tex is big enough for two large turkeys, but agree with gpb11 that they should fit nicely in a Daniel Boone. You should send a PM to Justin (WaterinHoleBrew)...he owns a DB, and is a good guy who'll answer any question you might have about a Daniel Boone.

... or you could just ask me since I have a GMG Daniel Boone.

I haven't done a turkey on it yet so couldn't say with 100% certainty above, but I'd be very surprised if I couldn't fit two good sized turkeys on it.

I'd be happy to check any measurements you need checked.

Sorry gpb11...I didn't realize you cook on a GMG...if I'd known that I surely wouldn't have tried to steer the OP in another direction, especially when you're already here trying to help.

No worries.  I tend to be circumspect about my stuff.

Back on topic...  I was at the grocery store last night and eyeballed the frozen turkeys.  I'm pretty confident a pair of 12 pounders would fit great depending on just how you're setting them up in terms of pans or racks.  Probably could manage a couple 16 pounders from what I saw just eyeballing it.

Guys,

Sorry for the delay in thanking you, it's been a bit crazy around here.

This was just the info I was looking for. I found a local-ish (2 hour drive) GMG dealer, and I'm off to see them next weekend.

When I get her home, I'll take pics stuffed with turkeys!

Very nice, I expect you'll be pleased.  Some random thoughts below pertaining to GMG:

Pellets.  Use what you can get.  I've been happy with GMG pellets but have been burning PitBoss and LouisianaGrills brands (both Dansons) as I've been able to get them substantially cheaper.  What's available at a good price varies by location, use "CookinPellets" from Amazon.com as your baseline for price comparisons.

Research the "Front Shelf Mod" that mounts a front-shelf kit inside as a removable second shelf.  I mention this because the GMG dealer is such a drive, if it's something you want to do then grab it while there.

If you're buying the wifi unit see if you can get the dealer to make sure it's updated to the latest firmware version.  Units built earlier this year had firmware with some special character restrictions for passwords that still trip up some folks either finally attempting to use it or who just bought it.  Current version v5.8 is much better in that regard.

Also on the wifi remember the thing uses the 2.4GHz size of the network and whatever device you use with it (android or iphone) also needs to be on the same band.  If your phone uses your routers 5GHz network you'll want to switch it over to use the 2.4GHz side.

Enjoy!
