My wife bought me a MES 30 and it was DOA. Brand new out of the box the control panel was bad, wouldn't stay on, showing crazy numbers etc. Unplugging it for a while would temporally re-set it just to fail again a little later.

Academy Sports graciously replaced it with another new one. I did get and use a AMPS with it.

I haven't used it many times but now the 2nd one is doing the exact same thing, shutting off mid smoke. It's well out of warranty now and I'm not sure I want to fool with this thing anymore anyway just to have it fail again.

I know now that I could have used a bigger smoker anyway. Going to have a hard time investing in another MES. after 2 failures for the same issue.

SO... what to replace it with? I really haven't had the time to do any research  on options.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Call Masterbuilt and they may have you cut the cord and send you a new one like they did for me.  They have worked with people a year or more after they purchased their smoker.

I agree with Dr. K. No way does Masterbuilt want to leave a customer unhappy after two failed smokers. I've read other members here post about MB sending them a new smoker after their out-of-warranty smoker died. The MES can be made in different Chinese factories and there's always a chance of a bad production run affecting all the smokers that might have come off the line during that period. MB may send you a new smoker that is trouble free. I bought my MES 30 Gen 1 3.5 years ago off Amazon and it's still working fine.

IF your wanting away from electricity.... A WSM is the way to go no electrical parts (alot less likely to crap out on you) No mods necessary, for any size of this unit to work properly, extremely easy to use, i am very very happy with mine, the only down side they are a tad expensive 200 for the 14.5 300 for the 18.5 and 400 for the 22.5. i hope you get your smoker problems fixed..

If I hadn't chosen to go with an electric smoker--and I'm glad I did--I would have gone with a WSM. I'm a huge fan of Weber charcoal kettle grills and the WSM is top rated among portable charcoal smokers.

i love mine i wish i had gone bigger to begin with tho. honestly one day i hope to get a good electric for the really long smokes...

Had the MES 40 been in my price range I would've bought it. As it was my spending limit was $200 and the MES 30 Gen 1 fit the bill nicely.
