I have a mes30 and just smoked 10 pounds of spare ribs, turned out great but the cleanup took an hour. Any ideas on cleaning the grates easier than using a half of a box of SOS pads? Can you put foil on the grates? By the way I did one foiled and one not. Doing no foil from now on much better.

I run my racks through the dish washer, on pans setting and dry setting off. They will almost come clean, SOS will finish up the tough spots. Pull them from the dishwasher as soon as it finishes that way the tough spots are still soft.

The one advantage of fire breathing smokers. Can jack the temps after the food is off and carbonized the mess) clean up is just a grill brush.

Not that I'm trying to rub it in or anything

I soak the racks overnight and they come clean easy.

The smoker walls I dont clean.

Nothing beats an overnight soak in a commercial degreaser and then a power wash. Before I purchased a pressure washer I would take them to the local car wash. Works great!

I spray the grill racks with Pam.  After the smoke drop them in a shallow tub of hot soapy water and let them soak while you eat.  Use a soft dish pan brush to take the worst off, and then into the dishwasher.  Very little work involved.

wow all that work for racks....my freind and i on his smoker just used like a grill, when done leave em and next heatup just wire brush and good to go.. no different than leaving the walls...

Newbie here with newb question. :)  I take it from the above discussion that it would be ok to leave the (mostly) burnt grease in the bottom of the smoker? It's an electric MasterBuilt 30 if that matters.

Just smoked our first meat last night, a pork loin and a whole chicken. They came out great! But the cleanup is looking to be a lot more work than a grill. On the grill I just fire up all the burners and burn everything off, but the smoker doesn't get that hot. Hence my concern about leaving the grease in the bottom.

Thnx!

RD stop by roll call so everyone can welcome you,Welcome to SMF. Now I would suggest clening the grease off the bottom, then before you do your next smoke, cover everything down below the grates with foil.

Thanks for tips, don't know why I didn't think about the foil. Doh!!  :)

I also use a MB 30" and smoke all kinds of things.  Unlike most on here, I do not foil the bottom of my smoker.  After I am through, I set the temp to 275* and let it burn everything off.  I do get a little build-up but every now and then I pull out the racks and the bottom tray and set them on my grill for about half and hour then wire brush then off.

Some days when I am not smoking anything and home, I roll out the smoker and let it go for 6-8 hours just to make sure there is no gunk in there.

It is not the best way and doesn't look pretty but that's how I do it.

I was fighting with cleaning my grill racks and then happened to grab a Norwex product that is kind of like steel wool, but not quite.     I used it on the rack and everything came off with zero elbow grease, so smooth.  Took them back to shiny silver in under 2 minutes.

So if you have a local rep or a home show maybe take a look at them.
