I've finally gotten my traeger pellet smoker and grill. Any traeger users out there recommend any other types of pellet brands and what combination makes the best heat/ smoke flavor combination? Looking forward to using my new baby.

Welcome.... Congrats on the new smoker, I have a GMG & really enjoy it ! Ya may check with other Traeger owners or check with the dealer,manual... Unless they changed, I thought your warranty would void if ya don't use Traeger pellets ? I know it used to be that way, but maybe they've changed on that !

Good morning and welcome to the forum, from another sunny and hot day in East Texas and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Waterinholebrew, I don't care about warranty, from what I understand is that it's kinda impossible to prove I use a different pellet should there be a warranty issue. I just understand that traeger pellets aren't 100% the wood they say it is. But thanks for the info.

Most pellets aren't 100% flavour wood. Traeger are 70% oak, 30% flavour wood east of the mississippi, 70% alder, 30% flavour wood west of the mississippi. I looked at BBQ'rs Delight. 1 lb bags are 100% flavour wood. 20lb bags were 70% oak, 30% flavour.

I've been using mostly Bear Mt Pellets in my Traeger.  I can get them at my local Cash & Carry, which makes it convenient since I get most of my meat there too.

Mostly I've been using Apple or Cherry, since the Missus likes those the best. But I use Hickory a bit too.

The only thing to watch out for with Bear Mt (as well as all pellet) is the amount of "dust" in the bottom of the bag, try not to just dump it in the hopper. The Traegers are notorious for "gummed up" augers.

I'm scared to use anything but Traeger pellets because I'm under my original warranty.  Did you wait until after your warranty was done to start running other pellets?  Just curious.

If you have a warranty issue pop up how, will anyone know what brand of pellets you used? I heat my home with a pellet stove, can't tell the difference, by appearance, between a "cooking" pellet and a "heating" pellet.

Yea pretty much, I waited until my second year to try anything different, but not solely because of the warranty. I bought my Traeger from Parr lumber, and with it, I could buy as many bags of pellets for half price.  I bought 8 bags!  during my 2nd year with the smoker, I had a friend get a green mountain smoker, and the deal he got with it included 3 bags each of hickory and mesquite, he didn't like the flavor of the mesquite so he offered them to me. Since I VERY RARELY turn down free stuff, I took them and used them.  After that, I just started buying the Bear Mt pellets.  Since the 20lb bag is $5.00 cheaper, and I get the same flavor, I decided to save the money.  Also Bear Mt has 33 lb bags of hickory and mesquite for about the same price as Traegers 20lb bag, I use those also.

Of course now I am so far removed from any warranty it doesn't matter much to me, and when I do get a major failure, I'll be buying a new Yoder, so I'm not too worried, it's those "small" failures (aka ignitor rod) that keep me going. Anything easy to fix and I'm good to go, plus the inside is so well seasoned.......

I guess the real question would be if the warranty specifically says "void if pellets other than Traeger are used". If not, legally they have not ground to stand on.

Great question, I too am curious how they would know.  The documentation is pretty clear that using anything but Traegar pellets voids the warranty.
