If the chip loader is closed, where does the MES draw air from to create airflow out the exhaust?

My chip loader has three, approximately 1/4" holes in it.

There are holes in the chip loader and the housing over the coil. No issues with air, although if you choose to use an AMNPS for pellet smoke, pulling the loader and pan out an inch, provides the extra airflow it needs...JJ

If you're done smoking and have foiled, do you close your vent completely or 50%, or 75%, until the meat is finished?

Yes, I have closed the vent though never completely and mainly in colder ambient temps.

I dont think my vent closes 100%?  Is there a clip there preventing it from closing 100% on the new MES BT?  Perhaps mine is jammed with creosote, not sure.  I tried to close it the other day pretty hard but it wouldnt close fully.

Your temp probe might have been in the way.

Mine closes 100% easily. (Gen #1)

No haha.  It must be jammed with creosote.  I will try close it next time it's hot.

+1 ... I have the new 2.5 Bluetooth bought at Sams and mine closes all the way also except maybe 1/64" or less of space remains when totally closed. .... I do wipe it off though when done smoking and cleaning the glass in the door, so it is always clean.

HA thanks.  Yeah the other guys were having a good laugh and you confirmed my suspicions!

I'm smoking two chuck roasts today. I foiled them and removed my AMNPS and set it on the ground. I separated the burning wood pellets from the unburnt ones and about 20 minutes later the smoke was gone. I have one ET-733 probe measuring the heat inside my MES 30 Gen 1 and the other is inside one of the foiled chuckies. The top vent is all the way open and the interior temp has remained steady at 239° for the past couple of hours.

I don't pull out the chip loader at all and I don't close the top exhaust because everything is working just the way it was designed to and my chuckies are now just 2° away from 200° which is when I'll pull them out of the smoker. I just like to keep things simple and easy. That's how it should be with an electric smoker and why I bought it and the AMNPS and the ET-733.

"Simple and easy " You go boy.     Jted

Me too.  I foil my flats at 165 and stick them right back in the smoker.  Don't alter my temp or move the vent.  My A-MAZE-N dust smoker is usually just about gone when the flat hits 165. I run the flats at 235 and take them up to 200 internal.
