Good morning everybody. I'm new to the group and relatively new to smoking. I run a Chargriller Duo with an offset smoke box. I'm getting ready to toss on a 9lb shoulder with hickory and applewood. Quick question: I've got 2 bags of Traeger pellets that were given to me, can I toss those on the coals in place of my hickory chunks? Any input is appreciated. I've been on here just two days and already gathered a lot of good info. Keep it up everybody.

Good morning and welcome to the forum, from a warm & partly cloudy day in East Texas and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Welcome uncle Mac! There is a forum on this site dedicated to pellet smoking with tons of info. I use pellets, but only in an AMNPS tray. It does say on the bag, however, that you can add them to a charcoal fire. You'll have to try it in your smoker to see how it works. My only concern would be not gett as much smoke.

Thanks Steve. I'm giving them a whirl. Pretty good for quick hickory smoke but burns up fast. Ideal for me since I tend to overwhelm with hickory and mesquite. I'm using mainly applewood with some hickory thrown on sparingly.
