So as some of you all know I am going for my first  boston butt this coming weekend.  Several of the guys on this site have been VERY helpful posting in the thread I started about 4th of July boston butt.  Gotten some good info through PM's too.  I thought I was all set but then got to thinking and reading.

My plan was to go to Lowes and take advantage of the Kingsford blue bag sale. But considering this pork is going to take anywhere from 8-10 hours as an estimate, wouldn't it be better to use a different kind of charcoal?  I'm doing it on a 22" weber kettle grill using the snake method.  For longer smokes would it be better to drop the Kingsford and maybe go with Stubbs?  Lowes has the 15lb bag for $9.99.  I was reading that it burns longer, less ash, and provides more heat.

What are your guys opinions?  Just stick with my original plan, or use the Stubbs for longer smokes and use Kingsford for shorter things like chicken?  I seem to use the lump charcoal for burgers and steaks because it burns very hot and doesn't seem to burn long either.  Makes me wonder how some guys actually do smoking with lump.  Semms to burn pretty fast to me.

Any help is appreciated.

Kingsford will work fine if that's what you want. I love Stubb's for long, short and everything in between, so that would be my choice. The snake method is the key long cooks. Yes, the Stubb's will last longer, but the K'ford will last long enough to get you through a butt.

Thanks man!

I prefer the Stubbs, about half a bag does an 8 pound butt on the kettle for me.

Good Luck

The Blue will be fine , I used Kingsford competition this last weekend and it took some time to adjust the temp. With the blue it has never been an issue.

Thanks. However I'm going to try the Stubbs for the butt I'm dong this weekend.

Hey while you have all those bags, compare the sizes of the bags vs. their weights to see which charcoal is the most dense.

I picked up my first bag of Stubbs when I noticed it was smaller and heavier than the cheaper brand next to it. I'll buy more.
