Thanks, Dave, Growing is like smoking. You have to be patient but you get something great at the end,

Looks great Disco! We have some jalapenos in my wifes herb garden, but haven't tried garlic. We should because we sure use a lot of it!

Mine is also coming up.  Thanks to a great left coast friend!    This is my first year trying to grow it.  I'm excited to try it.

One question.  How do I know when to pull it?   Or do I need to dig it up?

It is easy to grow and it is so superior to the store bought variety that you would never go back! Go for it!

I wait until most of the leaves start to brown and then put a fork under it and lift it. I should point out that Dave Omak on the forums is the expert on garlic.

Evening men..... Time to throw a light bit of ammonium sulfate on the onions, garlic etc.... every few weeks I give it a sprinkling of the stuff.. light watering to wash it in.....

Reminds me about the story.... 3 really old guys... sitting around the fire.... telling lies about each other to brighten the day....

The first one says, " you are all really smart"........

Disco - What variety of tomatoes and garlic?
For the garlic I do 5 varieties. I find some store better than others and I get longer use out of them by using the early ones first. The varieties are:
  • Russian Red (mid lasting)
  • Polish (very large cloves and short lasting)
  • Yugo (quite long lasting)
  • Spanish Roja (long lasting)
  • ? (a friend gave me a bulb of this garlic years ago. Her family has been raising it for years and just call it garlic, very long lasting).
For tomatoes, my main crop is Stupice. It is a heritage non determinate that grows slightly larger than golf ball size tomatoes. Very tasty and very early.

I do a crop of Manitoba tomatoes as well. They are about baseball sized and are short enough season to grow around here. They process well for sauces, canning and freezing.

I also buy a yellow cherry tomato and a red cherry tomato from the nursery every year. You have to have something to snack on in the garden.

Thanks for the info espeacialy on the Stupice tomato.

For garlic I am only growing Early Italian.  I would like to try the Spanish Roja at some point.

Tomatoes I grow

Amish Paste, Large Red Cherry and Brandywine

I looked up Stupice and it is 60-65 days... yes VERY early.

I believe Early Italian is a softneck and lasts very well but it wouldn't be as hardy here on the mountain.

I had friends who grew Brandywine when I lived on the coast. Very nice! However, it would have no chance here in our short season. Ergo, I grow early varieties.

Yes Early Italian is a softneck, it stores well so I grow it.

I have on average 150 frost free days..  Gives me a decent season of growing.

I guess I need to sign up for Disco's  Garlic of the month club,   "Can't wait for my first shipment"
