I am off until the 5th so I will be trying this. I am thinking a prime rib for New years eve.

I like how the manual says this is not to be used indoors. I would have liked to heard that conversation when the guy fired it up inside.

It's the season! For me new iGrill2, took advantage of Todd's sale and ordered 8' of Q mats and a 6" tube smoker. Today the Lem 5# stuffer. Them there's the non smoker stuff, Makita 18 lithium drill, driver, saw combo, Porter cable pancake compressor with 2 guns and a stapler. Damn holiday sales!!!

Wow, you must have been really good this year for Santa to bring you all of that.

I got a bit of a bonus this year at work and decided to treat myself. I saw this and could not pass it up. I have been wanting one and figured what the hell. I am used to a Offset smoker using charcoal and wood so this should be a fun learning experience.

You just greatly upset me. I bought mine over two years ago on Amazon for $189.99 because I didn't want to wait for a better price. But I tell ya, this is one great smoker and you got it for the lowest  reported price I've seen. Enjoy!

Welcome to the Family, Link!!

----I paid $119 for my first one, which was the exact one you got there, but that was over 5 years ago!!

I know You know where to get hints for your Prime Rib & other things.

And just yell if you have any Questions!!

Thanks Bear, I just may be asking for some tips. I am not used to this electric smoking stuff.

Yes, I got it at Tractor Supply (last one they had).

I just seasoned it following the instructions from the manual and I am pretty impressed.

It ran 3 hours set to 275° and held that temp pretty damn close. I saw it hit 281° but it held mostly at 272°.

I still need to get a good Thermometer/Probe but I am excited to give this baby a spin.

Ok Bear,

Being new to the MES world (I have been going through the MES Group posts) I want to run this thing as is and see what it does.

With that being said:

First question that pops in my head is this. Are there any Mods you (or anyone else) recommend that have to be done?

Those temps sound good !!

The biggest problem is if you have different temps at different spots in the smoker.

Mods needed depends on the individual MES. I needed the heat deflector plate in my MES 40 to push heat from the right side to the middle, but I didn't need that in my original MES 30.

I would get a Maverick ET-732 & put the probe at different places & see what you got. Since the MES 30 is smaller it might not be a problem.

i had a problem on my 30 over Christmas. It would not heat and i thought the element was out , but somehow i remembered reading on the MES group about the connection on the element going bad and burning up.,. Well i took the inspection plate off the back and that is exactly what had happened. After putting a new Stakon crimp electrical connector on the wire and cleaning the end of the element up, i put it back on and was back in business in short order. i wonder how many people threw there's away when it quit heating.

Thanks SMF MES Group for the heads up on this little glitch..

By the way, the 30 cooks much better than the 40. I have both. I use my 40  for a warming drawer and for jerky only.

Glad to know that you were able to both spot the problem and fix it quickly. How long have you had your MES 30? I own the MES 30 Gen1 and it's good to know that from your experience the the 30 cooks better than the 40. But I'm curious: how does it cook better. I've thought about getting the 40 someday just because of the larger cooking space and the 1200 w heating element.

That's easy,
That's because his MES 40 is a Gen #2, and his MES 30 is a Gen #1.

I have used both of them myself, and I would much rather have the MES 30 Gen #1 than the MES 40 Gen #2.

I should have said it cooks more evenly..The 40 has cold spots in it.,I think it is because the exhaust is on the side not the top. You would think the manufacturer would do thermal imaging tests on the unit to see if it heats evenly. With the 30 the cooking chamber is smaller so therefore the heathas no choice but to be more evenly distributed, plus the exhaust is on the top. Thats just my take on it and how I see things.

Yup----That's part of the problem with the Gen #2, however the biggest problem is that slanted Drip Plate that is higher on the right than on the left. That plate traps the heat under it & it stacks up on the right side, below the plate, and then seeps out, but most of it goes up the right side because the right side of that drip plate is higher than the left side.
