44" Smoke Hollow caught on fire tonight! My fault though.

I was hot and fast smoking a spatchcocked turkey when I went out to check the temperature only to find flames shooting outside of the smoker!

My pellet smoking tube rolled up against the side of the smoker which caused the grease/smut in the crease between fire box and the smoke box to catch fire.  It was literally a ring of fire on the inside and outside of my smoker where the two boxes are bolted together.  Cut off and disconnected the propane tank right away thinking that it may settle down, but nope.  It was growing, so I had to get the fire extinguisher involved.

As a testament to all of those people that say they can't get a pellet tube to stay lit - check out Todd's!  In the last pic you can see it still belching out beautiful smoke even after being hit with a fire extinguisher!  I say this in total jest and still swear by Todd's stuff - it was the positioning of the tube that caused my issue.  I just found it funny that it started smoking again about 30 minutes after being hit with a fire extinguisher yet some people can't seem to get them lit....

No one hurt and I expect the smoker will clean up just fine.  Just an experience and a good reminder to keep a working fire extinguisher around just in case.

Holy Smokes!  Thanks for the heads up on this item.  I'm not sure my wood smoker would have survived the event.  lol

It was not the fault of any of any of the equipment, but rather how I used them.

Please don't hold this against any of the manufactures of the products mentioned - they are great and I will continue using them.

Just a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong.

That's why I said, "the heads up"  I wasn't accusing the manufacturer of making a bad product.  I simply meant it's a good idea to make sure the pellet tube won't roll.  I happen to like the A-Maze-N pellet tubes.

We learn something every day.

Good thng you went out there!
Yeah, it is.  It was just a fire inside the box with a little coming out of the gap in the door when I went out there, but it spread around the whole thing within about a minute, maybe two.

My fire extinguisher was about 16 years old and I kept it just outside the kitchen/garage door, but still in the garage.  I knew where it was (as does the whole family) but I questioned whether it would work or not when I was going to get it.  Luck has it that it did, but I haven't even checked that thing for years and years.  Maybe a good heads up to check yours.

Wow Jax, that's wild and scary.

Just an FYI for future reference, baking soda is great with grease fires.  I keep a 5lb bag of it on hand just in case.

Would never happen on a pellet grill...

I saw on here somewhere someone used muffler clamps at the ends of the tube to keep it from moving around..glad you caught it when you did!

How was the turkey

Covered in the white powder that comes out of fire extinguisher.  Two days later with the door wide open and not a cat or cockroach had touched it when I went out to bag it for the trash.  I told the wife that it was snowing. She rolled her eyes and went to bed.

Muffler clamps idea was so good.. I made my own U bolts with 1/4" stainless all thread.. gave it about 2 inch legs so it sets up off the heat diffuser ...
