My name is Denise and looked around here before purchasing a Masterbuilt Eelectric Smoker from QVC last week. Well, it is defective so it will be returned ASAP.  My husband was really excited about it and very disappointed today.  Maybe the members can recommend another electric smoker brand?

Uh, complain to QVC about the malfunction... which one did you get, when I was watching , I though since the Red one was QVC exclusive , it would be better made ... maybe not?

Anyway the MES owners I have encountered have been pretty pleased with the machine. A few Mods. and you're good to go.

Good luck on the return...

Have fun and . . .

My brother in law just ordered one from QVC today.

Oh, :welcome1: to the best BBQ site on the net.

Thank you all for the welcome!

Why would I modify a new machine?

Got a few questions after reading more posts and my head is spinning because I am over my head with all the information. What do you guys do with a smoker full of meat? Do you eat it all at once or do you freeze it? Do you smoke when you have a crowd over for dinner? We are close to being empty nesters. Is the cost of smoking 1 roast or a rack of ribs really worth it energy wise?

I thought the electric smoker my husband purchased was a brand new product. After reading posts and complaints on the internet, I see this particular model has been around for at least a year and people have contacted the manufacturer about problems incurred after only a few uses. Why keep something that is not living up to the company's claims? The more I read about this product, the less enchanted I become with this company.

A comment was made that one gets what one pays for. The MES Generation II retails around $400+ so do other reliable smokers usually cost more? It seems to me that die hard smokers would gladly pay more, but what about those who may smoke about 1x a month? I foresee this item sitting in the garage more often than actually being used. Warranty is only for 90 days. Hmmm.

I noticed that this forum has a member from Masterbuilt. I have not seen any responses from him regarding the complaints about his company's products.

First of all, Welcome to the forum!!
I will try to answer some of your questions, but the answers are only my opinion and no one elses.
There are three people at my house on a daily basis, so the smoker full of meat usualy happens here when we are having quests or when I am smoking something intended for the freezer, such as pulled pork that i freeze in portions to be reheated for a meal for the three of us, or something that will keep well in the fridge like jerky. As to the cost it is only a little more expensive to smoke a rack of ribs, than it is to cook them at the same temps. in your oven. But you get the benifit of a better tasting product. Think of that aspect in terms of $3 for a fast food joint hamburger verses $9 for a realy great burger restaurant hamburger.
The MES Generation II has been around for a while. Are they perfect? No!! Will they make good smoked food? Yes!!
The mods that you see are just the owners way of trying to inprove the manufacturers product to suit the owner and still stay within their budget. If the manufacturer of the MES Generation II could incorporate all of the mods into their product the price would be out of there intended consumers budget. There are products out there that include the things that the modders do to there masterbuilts but they are as much as 5 thimes the cost. If you only intend to smoke a few times a year the MES Generation II, once you learn how to use it will suit you fine right out of the box.
Sorry for the lengthy reply Hope I answered some of your questions

My husband still wanted to learn how to smoke meat after returning the 30" Gen. II MES so we purchased a large Big Green Egg. We went that route because we didn't want to deal with anything electrical.  We do not have a covered patio or outside electrical outlet.

Yesterday we broke it in by grilling hamburgers.  We were impressed with the BGE because of the heat retention after we had finished using it.

I know many members have one of these in their collection of smokers.  I was wondering if the covers specifically designed for an egg is worth the price.

IMHO any custom fit cover is worth the price, if you are storing your unit outside. The custom covers resist wind and rain better than the generic ones and they will last longer. Your green egg is a great decision on your part I think you will end up very happy with it!! As with any new grill/smoker there is a learning curve involved.
Keep Smokin!!!

I was wondering how thick the material was. I really do not want to pay a lot of money for a cheap cover with the brand name on it.

Back in the day when I didn't mind spending a few extra bucks I had all my covers custom made. Boat, patio furniture grills, smokers etc. There are a lot of advantages, Quality being number one, color or pattern choice, multiple colors custom fit the way you want. You can have access flaps with Velcro, pretty much the sky is the limit. Check with local canvas and awning  places
