Has anyone ever put beer in their water tray? Im trying to get the same effect as beer butt chicken. I have to spatchcock em to all fit.

In my not so humble opinion you won't get any flavor from the beer putting it in your water pan.....not adding any herbs (Sorry Mule

)  I used to be of the mind it would as well.....so I tried without......tasted.....then tried with and there was no discernible flavor profile at all.

Agreed.....Never noticed a difference between flavored items and water.

The last two posts are what I and many others find no difference so just drink the beer

Yep - I would agree that it adds no additional flavour in mine either. I just use water again now and save the beer/wine/herbs for the marinade/rub.

Another one for the NO group... sorry.

IMHO, Same goes for beer can chicken, however some herbs come through nicely but water in place of beer works just as good.

I cannot taste the difference between beer and water in a beer can chicken either but liquid or no liquid does make a difference to the texture of the chicken.

Freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice can add some flavour though, especially if you also cap the top of the chicken with the squeezed half of the fruit. It needs to be something with strong flavoured volatile oils to impart any meaningful flavour. This was probably why the herbs work for SQWIB.
