Give the fire about 6 Martini's.......well that always slows me down

Tiny splits and feed constantly
I do this when solo camping for cooking I keep the fire about the size of a large coffee can.
Just enough fire for light, cooking and to knock down the chill a bit.

Start with a lot of wood and get a good coal bed. Using a fire basket is a must to have good fire management. (for me anyhow)

make your splits small 8" long or under, split them so they are fairly thin pieces (no round pieces)

then after your coal bed has no flame, feed a split as often as needed, but be warned, keeping a really low fire requires constant attention, because if you run out of hot coals, your wood will stay in the combustion stage longer and smolder (more smoke).

Spend a lot of time making the perfect splits for your cook and start the fire with your junk wood, such as knotty wood, bad cuts, rounder pieces etc...

Dog to reference size. this split is about 10" long.

Just to be clear.  The dog if to reference the size or to adjust the size.  I don't think that stick is going to be 10 inches for long if the puppy has any say in it.

True... very true.

The dogs nuts, she'll pull out every piece, chew on it 5 minutes or so and grab another piece.

sorry to get off topic.
No sorry neccesary.  If she's in the pictures she deerves a comment.  I have a Shepard mutt.  He sits out there with me when I smoke.  Good thing because my wife surely wont!  lol

Great pic's of the pup.

thanks man, the first fire pick u had thats what i mean by slow flame!!

The way I do it is to get my wood ( several sticks ) burning and let them burn down to just coals then feed with small amounts of wood. You are going to have to be the one to decide how large a fire you are going to need for your smoke...good luck..
