I just came back from the little independent wine shop near me.I got 6 different bottles of red from 2012 & a 2 litre box for $100.

No wonder this country drinks so much. 6 bottle discount about 20%.

I got some Mount Monster because its just up the road from Cape Jaffa & I thought the comparison would be interesting for Leah.

3x different GSMs & a cab /shiraz will be a later post.

I have some wagyu short ribs marinating in EVO,balsamic, garlic, cbp & red wine.

I will get them into the MES.

Should have taken  photo before marinade, lovely marbling of fat.

Hell of a colour, deep purple.
Dug around for some tasting notes ,nose blackberry & plum. It does have a lot of forest berries, cherry notes. There are some violets, white pepper ,spicy .
It won the trophy in a major wine competition for best value for $ & several other awards. By the case $15 or so a bottle! That's a lot of bang for your buck.
Got ribs on, will have a side of purple kale stir fried with some of the most recent batch of bacon.

Holy Beautiful!!! Mick this all looks fantastic! And that "Monster" of a wine, looks absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!! The color on your Aussie stunners is really something!

Your meal must have paired masterfully! And it seems that you have a fabulous shop there as well!

I meanwhile, was in The People's Republic of Vermont over the weekend, and drank some Spanish wine. Today I had some tasty mussels for lunch and must choose some vino next!

But this thread/posting of yours is exquisite! Those seaside wineries sound like magnificent finds! Magical really! Thank you for sharing this!!! I love learning of these less commercial picks!!!

Cheers!! And happy Sunday!!!!! - Leah

Cape Jaffa a better wine! Mount Monster a family outfit but might get enough traction from the competitions it entered to be an export option.
I discovered it a few years back, minimal sulphides & over delivering to get noticed. It turns up in the little independent wine shops that have to work hard to compete against the big players.
I will try the cab later in the week.
I tried a Dandelion Vineyards GSM 2012 with my jerk goat. 85% Grenache 10% Shiraz 5% mataro. Still thinking about it ,have 2 glasses left for tonight.

The GSM wasn't that special!
Not sure where it went wrong ,great region, great vintage, but it lacked character. It should have been better than it was.
I bought a couple of GSMs including. Killakanoon from the Clare Valley . I have great expectations for it.51% 39% 10% & they are a real good outfit.
Bit of a soft spot for Clare Valley.

This was a better wine. It's a bit of a snapshot of how our industry has developed.
Build the super winery in a central location, put the top shelf winemakers on the roster then drive the grapes to them!
It's not a long drive!
We make some wines influenced by French tradition ,Shiraz,Grenache Southern French blends & Bordeaux blends of Cabernets or straight cab Sav.
However we have a great tradition of straight Shiraz which we excell at, on many levels.Regional styles, hot climate, cold climate, maritime climate ,big & bold, subtle & elegant everything between.
Then we do cab/Shiraz very Australian not done in Europe . It's a bit of Australia in a glass, great with grilled meats ,easy to drink ,hard to analyse ,it is what it is.Really approachable, unpretentious you don't need to explain it you just need to drink it.
Penfolds 389 the benchmark. Same number as the bus to Bondi Beach!

Sorry it's a Heartland wine made from grapes grown in Langhorne Creek in a winery facility in the Barossa Valley by Ben Glaetzer .
Great value ,great vintage.

Hey these wines of yours just sound delicious!

And the Penfold's Bin selections here, (in my "hood," as you'd say), have been surprisingly lovely, and wonderful with smoked, grilled, and raw meats as well!

To learn of these select brands however, is a real treat! Thank you tons! It's so fun and wonderful (and educational too) learning of them!!

Happy Tuesday!!!!!!!! It's a simple grilled camel burger and grilled eggplant day over here. Yum!

Cheers! - Leah

I am just poking around the new releases for 2012 in the hope I can highlight some that may be available for you.The USA wine distribution & marketing system is so strange to an outsider.

Its such a tough competitive market here with so many wines to pick from. You just gotta taste them because the copywriters put all sorts of stuff on the labels

Funny thing with those GSMs such a classic Southern Rhone wine but so much depends on the ratio.

I love Killakanoon they make great wines across the board,I will get to their 2012 GSM soon.Research but somebody has to do it.
