Hi All,

I see on the REC TEC web site accessory section that they will soon have a folding front shelf. The REC TEC name will be laser cut in the center of the shelf. REC TEC says it will be 12" deep and the width of the pit. It will bolt onto the existing front leg bolt holes. Easy install for sure. Heavy gauge formed steel. Powder coated paint finish.

Yeah I saw those.  They claim they will be ready to start shipping them some time in February.  I got the idea from another forum to order a shelf from Traeger for my Rec Tec...its the one that fits the Traeger Texas.  Its less expensive than the one from RT ($69.00, sometimes on sale for even less), plus Traeger has free shipping, which RT does not.  And it fits like it was made for a Rec Tec!  I've used the pit 3 or 4 times since I installed it, and I couldn't be happier.  The front shelf is definitely a needed accessory.  Here's a couple pics I took today:

Extended...IMO it looks almost like it was made for the RT.  I like the rounded corners.

Folded down so when I store it in the garage, it doesn't take up any more space than before.

Just another option for those of you who don't want to wait fort the RT shelf, or don't want to pay $99 plus shipping costs.

How sturdy is the Traeger shelf? Could it stand up to quite a bit of weight (30-40lbs)? I don't want to have my meat staging there and the shelf decide to give out. Just wondering...

I guess the same question could be asked about the REC TEC Shelf if anyone has experience with it yet.

Thanks

Brian

I'm not sure what the Traeger shelf is rated to hold, but I've had probably 25-30 lbs on it no problem.  I wouldn't want to put 50 lbs on it, but its pretty sturdy.

That's good to know. I find myself wanting more shelf space on the REC TEC for staging the food before going on the smoker. I would hope it would at least hold 3 or 4 Butts or 2 Briskets. Hmm...now i want one!

Thanks for the input.

That's awesome! 100 pounds would be more than it would ever see. I wouldn't expect anything less from REC TEC. The magic 8 ball says a purchase is in my near future!

I think the grill would tip over before the shelf would fail. The 40lb capacity hopper will keep the shelf from moving if you load the shelf up with pork butts or brisket.
