I just found an almost 6 lb pork butt in my freezer that I was saving up to smoke and forgot about. It's dated 2 years ago. It was wrapped really well in plastic wrap and a zip-top bag and shows NO signs of freezer burn.

Should I go ahead and smoke it?

PS - my outside freezer is kept at, or below 0

I don't see why not. You could make chilli if it tastes a little stale. You will know when you open it up and give it the sniff test. I smoked a 2 year old turkey a couple years ago and it came out fine. Maybe Boudin or cured smoked sausage are thoughts too.

As long as it isn't freezer burned and it doesn't smell funny you should be fine. I read a study that shows if meat is packaged properly, that it can last in a deep freeze for 10+ years and still be fine.

I would cook it with no hesitation. Might not be optimal , But you'll know if it's bad once it's cooked , no? Give some to the cat first.

LOL!! But I don't want to spend 12 hours smoking a piece of meat just to find out it's no good.

Once it is thawed out you will know by  the look of texture and smell. If you do cook it make sure you cook some other meat for back up.

Me personally,,, my dogs would be very happy.

Yup. If it looks good and not freezer burnt, without a doubt I  would smoke it up.

That's a fair point! Well , like dan said , you should be able to tell what you got when it's thawed....and you can back it up with a chicken!

If I had it in my Zero Degree Freezer, I wouldn't worry at all, but I vacuum seal all of my meat.

Once it's vacuum sealed the meat has no idea how long it's been in the freezer.

Let us know how it turns out !!

The grim reaper came for me one night.  I had fresh striped bass in the freezer for ~5 months.  It looked and smelled fine.  It nearly finished me off.  To this day we dont know what happened.  But I'm worried about stuff being kept in freezers for too long, especially if they are not vac packed or in store packaging.

I would eat a little and wait ~6 hours to see how it goes before diving in.
