I am new to all of this and I have already learned a lot from this forum. I am a retired football coach, exploring new hobbies.  Last week I purchased a Masterbuilt 40 (new generation) at Sams and look forward to getting started.  Today it is -8 degrees in Illinois and I am wondering if I should be trying to use my new smoker? It is evident that there are a lot of knowledgeable meat smokers out there.  I appreciate all of you who are sharing that knowledge! .  Once again thank you for all of your help.

Yes, there is a lot to learn from this forum. I started smoking when I retired late in 2012 and I would have been doomed with these forums and kind members.

As for smoking in the cold with an electric smoker, I smoke in the Canadian Rockies and have smoke at -26 C (-16 F) by putting up a wind block for my electric Bradley smoker. Just make sure that you preheat well and you shouldn't have any problems. It is also the perfect time to cold smoke cheese or bacon!
