Hi There folks. I hope everyone is having a great day.

I just got my REC TEC delivered last Friday and spent the weekend getting it put together and of course making BBQ. Here are my initial observations and results from the first cook! Enjoy.

It came on a pallet and was packaged very nicely!

a closer look at the pellets (all 220 pounds of them) that come with the REC TEC Silver Package. There were a few different kinds...Hardwood, Hickory and REC TEC Blend.

Again, packaged and protected very good.

All the other goodies were safely inside the grill.

I was surprised with how well built the REC TEC really is. This pic is my best attempt to show how thick the metal is on the lid.

The belly of the beast! Everything on the cooker is sealed very nice. The hardware, legs and shelf are all very solid and were a cinch to put together.

Here she is all put together and getting broken in with...

Spare Ribs and Chicken Legs and Thighs! This shows you just how much you can fit on the REC TEC. And finally....

The Finished Product

Coming from gas smokers and stick burners, I have to say that I was skeptical of Pellet Smokers. However after using the REC TEC, I  don't think that I will ever be able to go back! The RT was very easy to put together and was able to do it by myself. It holds extremely steady temperatures and is fairly even across the whole cooking surface as you can see in the video below. The hardware and materials used to build the RT seem to be more sturdy than both Traeger and Green Mountain which I saw in person at the local Pellet Store. To top it off, REC TEC's customer service is second to none. That has been well documented just about everywhere, but it is 100% true!

Not being able to see the RT in person before making my purchase had me a little nervous at first. I had played around with and seen the Traegers in action and also looked long and hard at the Green Mountain Jim Bowie. Between talking with the guys at RT and the 6 month same as cash financing, I was sold! So far, I am very happy that I made the choice to go REC TEC and hope to be posting lots of Qview in the near future!

Cheers and Good BBQ to all!

Glad you are a "happy camper"!  I got to use a brand new Yoder 640 this past weekend at and Event I was helping with.  I was totally impressed by the one I used and was wondering about you who own the Rec Tecs.

Hmmmm......I am thinking about a Pellet smoker/cooker myself.

Hi Kat,

Yes, you can say that I am a "happy camper'! I was looking at the YS640 as well. Its build like a...

.  I think I would have to work out more often just to open the door on that thing. My local Pellet Store carries Traeger, Green Mountain and Yoder. The Yoder is definitely a beast, but just a bit outside of my price range. I would love to get a chance to cook on one though!

I just posted the only 2 pics from the event that I worked in this forum.  It was soooo cool.  Way too easy to use.

Hmmmmm, now you got me thinking RecTec again. I agree....I saw the Green Mountain units at the local farm supply store and wasn't impressed with the quality while the price was around $750....a sizeable investment. And no way would I consider a China Traeger for their asking price. I've seen those on display at Costco and again, not impressed. SeenRed gave it glowing reviews as well and I like the same as cash offer....almost painless.....Willie

Chef Willie,

I went through the same thing! During my initial search, I was really excited to get my hands on the Green Mountain. But, when I actually saw it, I was a little disappointed at how flimsy the lid was, but was impressed with some of the other features it had. I'm sure that it will produce very good food and don't want to bad mouth them considering I have never actually cooked on one. However, I did feel a little let down by the quality. I had read glowing reviews on the REC TEC and customer service, etc. Like I said, I took a leap of faith ordering one without actually seeing it, but am very happy that I did. Its sturdy, has a great controller, holds a ton of pellets and cooks darn good food.

I have been thinking of upgrading and was leaning towards the green mountain. This is good info.

Thanks.

Glad to help. The Green Mountain has some very nice features that the REC TEC doesn't and vice versa. On the Green Mountain I liked the built in meat probe,  the remote control and I like the higher lid height. But for me personally, I wanted something good and sturdy. I already have the maverick temp probes and rarely need more space than what the REC TEC has. Another thing I liked about the REC TEC was the built-in light. I can't tell you how many times I've had to deal with headlights or flashlights while doing overnighters. Good luck with the upgrade!

It is always a balance. The main thing that is taking me to the Green Mountain is the lower range of operating temperatures. It will continue to run at 150 F. Sigh, I am too old for all these hard decisions.

Congrats, Brian!  Another satisfied Rec Tec customer!  My RT is my first experience with pellet pits...I've cooked on gas, electric and stick burners.  My opinion, its the best pit I've ever cooked on.  Easiest to use, most steady and consistent temp control, and I think I'm cooking better food than ever before.  Be sure to post your impressions as you get it 'broke in'.

I hear ya! The lowest setting on the RT is 180 F.

Red, I plan on posting plenty of Qview! I'll make sure to keep the impressions coming.

I am going blind doing research for a Pellet Grill, it seems everything is pushing towards a REC TEC, especially after seeing the picture of how much it holds.

I have had my Rec Tec for 6 month.  I have gone thru over 1,000 lb of pellet.   I am so glad they are only 90 min from me so it was easy to go get another 1000 lb of pellet.  Will be doing a Boston Butt this week.  And next week will be doing 6 Butt at the same time for a Relay For Life event.

Hi Al...good to see you check in! Glad to hear you're liking your Rec Tec...sounds like you're getting the most out of that pit! Thumbs Up
