I have been contemplating building a uds and had a couple questions. 1st is If i get a food grade drum is the interior coating a big deal or do I still need  to remove it? Second question is to have it powder coated, is high temp powder really necessary, considering they cure it at 400-450 and i won't be anywhere near that.

Mine is spray painted but soon i'll get it sandblasted and powder coated because i found a place to apply high temp powder and sand blasted for $75.   It'll look nicer and stay nicer longer with it...but nothing wrong with paint.

Burn it out, build the racks, charcoal basket, and air inlets....  spray the inside with veggie oil and season....  You don't have to finish the outside...  be sure the inside is food safe and let her rip........ Some really great food has been made on ugly cooking fixtures.....

I could not burn mine out, due to the burn bans where I live. I took it to a local powder coat shop and they quoted me $75 to sand blast and coat the exterior with high temp powder coating. So I had them do both. Would've been $25 to blast inside and out, we'll worth it even if you can burn.

Thanks for reply's. I realize powder coating is not necessary but just wanted to know if someone has done it with non high temp powder and how its holding up. Thanks again and keep the ideas coming.

At the shop I used the price difference between the High Temp and the lower temp product was $0. You are limited on colors, black or silver with black being able to withstand the most.

The place i'm going to and the place dirtsaylor went both charge the same for high temp as they do the regular..so it makes sense to go high heat.   Also i powder coater i spoke with said the regular stuff does NOT hold up on BBQ's.

It's been busy the last few weeks so I wanted to give an update on my progress. After talking to most of the powder coaters around I gave up on the powder coat idea and am just going to paint it. I found a food grade barrel that contained honey for $20, drilled my vent holes and did my burn out. Here is the barrel when I got it home.

I found a brand new Char Broil 22.5" grill on Craigslist for $25. So I have my grate and dome lid, I ended up cutting the top 4" off of the bottom half of the CharBroil (if that make any sense) and tack welded it in the drum so the lid fits right.

I lucked out on the ball valve, went to Lowes and got one for $12, then had to go to get some el cheapo cut off wheels at Harbor Freight in the back corner of the store was their clearance section they had brass 3/4" ball valves for $2.98 so I bought 9 of them. Needless to say I returned the other back to Lowes. I seasoned the inside and it just needs a couple finishing touches i.e a stove gasket around the top, handles, and a final coat of paint.

I went with a high temp engine enamel this is after the first coat.
