Got the drum and the CasaQ parts back from the powder coater! Super happy! Everything looks fantastic. The interior cleaned up super good! The thing in the bottom do the drum is the base for the CasaQ. Need to get the materials for charcoal basket and we'll be cooking! $75 we'll spent!

I'm curious what that Casa Q looks like.

happy smoken.
David

Thanks David. I needed it blasted because I can't burn where I'm at, and since I was having the other parts coated I splurged!!! Gonna cut into my smokin meat fund for a few months! Good thing I have some stuff in the freezer! If I only had them blast it I would have paid $25 which I think is a really fair price.

Yea i figured the FB would be the biggie. I'm sure she'll be as good as new and ready to pass to the next generation!
Yeah I could go but the BGE large firebox but its just a smidge to large at the top to fit. So I'd have to raise it up and then the cooking grate would be off a bit.y plan now is to make an expanded metal basket to support the original parts. The basket will have feet that go to the bottom of the smoker. Heck I guess a grate with feet would hold it!!! Hmmm!!

Okay, after a long weekend of kids birthday parties, sleepovers, swimming I think that I can get the plumbing done for the vents. We are having record highs an lows here right now. Was 75 last night and is going to be 100+ today!!! No smoking cheese here! I went to move the drum yesterday and wasn't wearing gloves. BIG mistake!!! Black and 100* =

OUCH!!!

Case i'm gonna put you in the same camp as farmer unless you " get-er-done " !    What are you using for a basket?  If i didn't have the kit i would have used a Weber charcoal  grate(one for a 18" grill) and expanded metal.

Hey looking at my photo to post ratio I can post at least another 400 posts before accomplishing anything

I plan on using the grate and expanded metal since I don't have a welder. That's how I made the basket for the mini. I used rebar ties to hold it together with the intention of bolts and or welding it. But it keeps going so I have just left it! ! I should've welded it up when I visited Jetman Dan and built the base for the CasaQ. All my welder friends here are too busy right now.

I have a plan for an adjustable rack, basket system and I am going to source out the materials for that this evening. I need to sizes of the components so that I know the racks and basket is going to work. Guess I should measure the interior of the barrel too

Time to get this show on the road!!! 102* outside makes handling a black steel drum not much fun!!!

I made a template for my drum for aligning the lower vents and the rack supports. I aligned one of the lines with the drum seam.

Thank goodness for beer!!

From the template I marked the lines on the bottom of the drum. I measured from the seam each way to check for accuracy. On my drum it ended up being 24 1/8" to the mark. I then copied the measurement to the other end of the drum.

I clamped a straight edge to use as a guide for my holes. I drilled a 1" hole 2" up from the bottom for the lower vents. I also drilled a 1/4" hole 4 1/2" from the top for my rack supports. I will drill the other rack support holes once I have attached the rack at the top.

I will be using three modified double bracket supports for the grate and firebox adjustable rack system.

Bosch with a metal blade made fast work of modifying the supports.

The powder coaters needed to drill a hole in the bottom of the drum so they could hang it. So I plugged it. If I ever need a drain it is now there.

Done for now.
