Chris here, originally from South Florida, I have been residing in Charlotte area since 2008.

I have a gas grill I use frequently, and a Brinkmann I am using more and more.

LOVE SMOKING!!

My favorite things to smoke are chicken leg quarters (love turning $4 of multiple pounds of cheap chicken, into smokey, stickey goodness), Pork butt, and chicken wings.

I have yet to tackle brisket or ribs yet, but cannot wait!!!

I am a big miami dolphins fan, love having a cold beer while adding hickory wood chips to my wood pan, and playing with my 5 year old pistol of a son, and wife!!

Glad to be here!!

Thanks, Dave. I do have a question for some advice and what-not.

My Brinkmann vertical smoker has an issue with the connection from propane and the smoker light pan. It lights but doesnt get hot, stays low and then eventually turns off. The propane tank is fine, it works with my gas grill.

The vertical smoker is discontinued based on brinkmanns website, its veritcal, 2 shelves, then 2 stacked pans the wood pan is directly above the fire, the pan above is for water.

I was wondering if I could just use the bottom wood pan and place charcoal in it (with wood ontop of the coals) and use the water pan like usual?

I don't have much experience with charcoal but am excited to try it.

Have you checked the tube that goes to the burner? Spiders love to get in there and make a web and that will hinder the gas flow. It is a very common problem. Just take the burner loose and run a pipe cleaner into the tube towards the burner to clean it out then hook it all back up and try it.
Another related problem is the safety valve on the propane tank can get stuck, when you open the valve real fast it can get stuck and again will hinder the gas flow. A fix to this is to open the valve then slowly close it and slowly open it again. You said it works fine on your grill so I doubt it is that but you could try.

Thank you! I will try that immediatley when I get home tonight, would love to have my smoker for the 4th.

Additionally, if I can not fix the issue, do you think using charcoal would work? Would it take too much to keep it at the temperature I want (for a butt 225-250)

Thanks!
Chris

nothing wrong with turning a yard bird into sticky goodness!

Happy smoke.

David
My wife was sooooo skeptical at first. "Why is it so cheap if you can make it good?" Ill never forget when she took a bite of the crispy smoked skin, saw the pink smoke ring, and downed every bite!!! It was a great feeling!

Welcome neighbor! Glad you found us here and hope you get your smoker issue resolved real soon.

I have never used your model, but to use charcoal and control the temp you will have to have an air inlet that you can control, as well as an equally sized vent in the top. Not sure a cabinet made for propane has that kind of air flow control. Someone who knows what they're talking about will be along before long; I'm sure these guys will get you going.

I appreciate that, I never though about the air flow and vents in a propane smoker with charcoal. Thanks! Hopefully I can clean out the pipe and not have to worry about it. Ill report back this evening to let everyone know.

Good to see another Charlotte smoker here!
