I was wondering if it was possible to mix pellets with saw dust or small woodchips before adding the pellets to my hopper. Or could that damage a auger ? I'm only asking because I am curious to see if that would add more smoke..

You don't mention what type of pellet burner you are using. The hopper is designed for pellet use. The motor drives the auger at a preset speed to drop the pellets onto the burner to achieve a set temperature. Adding anything other than pellets to the hopper my void your warranty.

I agree with Dutch...I'm sure the manufacturer wouldn't recommend putting anything in your hopper except pellets.  If you broke an auger or motor, you're warranty would likely be voided.

Adding saw dust would intentionally create a situation like I had traveling to my first comp and left pellets in the hopper. The vibration broke some of them down into dust and upon lighting the grill ihe auger locked up after about 5 minutes due to the dust clogging it up. I know several pellet users who actually filter their pellets to remove any dust prior to adding them to the hopper. The auger will not mover the dust if you have a auger driven system.
